What is a certification?
A certification is a credential that is typically granted by a professional organization to convey to the public that you have specific skills or knowledge. Obtaining a certification usually involves varying degrees of experience, training and/or education, and a knowledge exam. Examples of certifications include Certified Welder, Microsoft Certified Professional, and Certified Registered Nurse. Certifications are typically optional, although some state licensure boards, and some employers may require them.
Additionally, more than one organization may offer similar certifications. Determining which certification is right for you may depend on what you are eligible for, what is funded through the Credentialing Opportunities On-Line (COOL) program, or what local employers are requiring for employment.
Some certifications are “stacked,” meaning that there are multiple levels of certifications. Sometimes the lower-level certification is a prerequisite to the higher level. In other cases, you can pursue the higher-level certification without the lower level, if you meet other eligibility requirements.
